Playground Project Update

Last summer, the smaller playground playscape was removed for safety concerns. This year, the Playground Committee has been working to secure funding and create a plan for a new small play structure. We’re happy to announce that a new small playscape will be installed in Summer of 2023!

Here’s an update on progress and what’s to come:

What’s happening with the Skillin Playground?

In fall of 2022, the PTA secured grant funding from GameTime to support the purchase of a new modular structure. The goal: replace the aging, structurally unsound playscape that was taken down in summer 2022. The structure is scheduled to be installed in late July.

How can the Skillin community help?

Skillin needs a group of parents, community members, and school administrators and staff to come together to make recommendations, secure funding, and execute improvements to the playground.

Where will funding for additional improvements come from?

When the current PTA board took the reins, there was already a fund in place for the purchase of playground equipment of roughly $5,000. Part of this funding has been used to purchase games and equipment for students

The Move-a-Thon generated an estimated $6,000! All of which will be used to improve the playground in the 2023-2024 school year.

The Playground Committee will seek sponsorships from local businesses to fund any additional improvements to the playground

What’s next for improvements?

The installation of the structure will require the removal and replacement of the current bay of swings. These swings cannot be relocated due to the topography of the playground area. After paying our portion of the structure’s cost and installation, a modest amount of district funding remains to accomplish this task. The Playground Committee is responsible for making recommendations to Principal Connolly, who will make the final decision.

The blacktop will be re-paved after the demolition of the current Memorial Middle School, and after the new middle school is settled. Skillin parent Erin Duncklee has offered to help design and paint blacktop games to keep those students busy and engaged who choose not to play on the playground structure, or who do not have weather-appropriate gear and must remain on the blacktop.

Funding through GameTime is also available for ability-inclusive items. The Playground Committee seeks to explore these options, consult with staff working with students with a range of abilities, and execute the purchase and installation of these structures.
