Skillin Newsletter from Principal Connolly (Late-May)

Hello Skillin Families!

We are having a busy and FUN May so far! The weather has been beautiful, and we had a GREAT day last week on our school-wide greening day. Many thanks to Mrs. Remsen and Tasha Dalessandro, Heather Piper and our amazing PTA volunteers for making it a successful and fun event and to our students, teachers, and staff for all their hard work around our school!

News from the Nurse’s Office

Please see these two updates from Nurse Kristie regarding our protocols for applying sunscreen and lice prevention/treatment.

  • Sunscreen - please apply sunscreen to your child in the morning before school and help them learn how to reapply it themselves! Do NOT send aerosol spray sunscreens to school please!

  • The following indications are from Chapter 40: Rule for Medication Administration in Maine Schools:

  1. Students may bring and self-apply sunscreen with written permission from a parent or guardian. An email to your child’s teacher is acceptable.

  2. Sunscreen should be in its original container.

  3. There is no expectation that school staff will apply sunscreen to students.

  4. A student who is unable to apply sunscreen may be assisted by school personnel when asked to do so by the student and if permitted by a parent.

  5. It is recommended that aerosol or spray sunscreen not be used in schools because it could adversely affect students with asthma and/or allergies.

  • Frequently Asked Questions about Lice

    • Please see this document for information regarding lice at school.

    • South Portland Schools do not exclude students from class for having lice, nor do we conduct classroom or school-wide checks for lice.

    • A few important things to know about lice:

      • Head lice do not cause disease.

      • Head lice only live on human heads; pets do not get or transmit head lice.

      • Head lice transmission is primarily by head-to-head contact, they do not fly or jump.

      • Head lice lay nits (small, silvery eggs) close to the scalp, cemented to strands of hair. The egg hatches in 7 to 10 days.

      • Empty egg cases may remain on the hair for weeks after an infestation if not combed out.
